Born in the US in the 1990s, venture philanthropy spread rapidly to the UK and continental Europe and is now beginning to appear in Asia. It’s talked about at foundation conferences, fundraising events and around the water cooler in development offices world-wide. But what is so important about this form of philanthropy? And how is the pitch of giving by this small group of “fringe” philanthropists having such an impact on our nonprofits? A member of the European Venture Philanthropy Association’s Finance and Fundraising Committee, Chris Carnie and his team at Factary have recently published a white paper with an insider’s look at venture philanthropy that is rarely seen. The report places VP firmly in context but then focuses specifically on the venture philanthropists themselves and their giving priorities. In this special session for ShareTraining, Chris will present an overview of key findings from the research, discuss venture philanthropy in Europe, and provide a beginner’s look into this growing form of philanthropic investment. From I95 (Northbound): Bear left at the junction to I-91N; follow I-91 North to Exit 3, Trumbull Street. **At the end of the exit ramp, go straight through first and second lights (Orange Street, Whitney Ave). Follow directions of guard for Lane 1 or 2 and take a parking ticket at entry. Once in the lobby, sign in at the guard station and take an elevator to the 8th floor. From I-95 (Southbound): Follow I-95 southbound over the Quinnipiac River Bridge. Stay in rightmost lane to pick up I-91 North (Hartford). Take Exit 3 off I-91N, Trumbull Street, and follow directions from ** above.
