Think Tank: Days of Future Past Pandemic - Conversations on the State of Philanthropy Data Science

Thursday, April 1st, 2021

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Online

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The COVID pandemic has certainly created a “big blip” in all our analyses and forecasts…. Or has it? Has this created an actual “new reality” for us in the philanthropy data science space? Would we have to search for new data and new methods? What about short-term vs. long-term prediction and forecasting? Finally, where are we all at after the one-year mark of a global pandemic?

This Thank Tank will focus conversations on if and/or how data sources, management, analysis, insights communication, as well as other aspects of computational philanthropy, have changed at our respective organizations since the start of the pandemic. Beyond the technical and technological, topics regarding organizational structure and talent management will also be discussed.

PRESENTER:

James Cheng currently holds the position of Senior Associate Director for Analytics, Prospect Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund’s Division of Philanthropy. Other than fundraising, he has made intellectual and professional forays into cell and development biology, high school teaching, academic research in education, as well as healthcare market research. While finishing up a doctorate degree in applied statistics in education at Boston College, James' interest in philanthropy was piqued when he took on the role of Prospect Data Mining and Modeling Specialist at MIT. After spending time in the corporate world as a healthcare market researcher, James left the Dark Side and returned to the Light in computational philanthropy, first at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as Associate Director and then at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as Development Data Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Scientist.
