Capacity Ratings & Continuing Care Retirement Communities: Leaving the Fog Bank?

Tuesday, September 29, 2026

1:00PM- 2:00PM  ET

Online

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to estimate a prospect’s planned giving capacity based on information found in CCRCs’ annual disclosure statements
  • Participants should be able to apply the session’s content to their own organization, tailoring as needed to meet organizational objectives
It happens all too often: you identify a prospect with high affinity, perhaps through some excellent proactive prospective research work, or great conversation at an event. However the prospect came to your organization, you know you want to qualify and (hopefully) solicit them for a meaningful gift. Then you find out that the prospect lives in a retirement community….and the fog bank of capacity ratings for retirees moves in, leaving you at a loss trying to assign a capacity rating. This presentation provides attendees with new information and strategies to better determine capacity for prospects living in retirement communities, specifically a type known as a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). It relies heavily on prospect research, utilizing capacity rating calculations and less well-known reporting on retirement communities, and is relevant for any prospect development professional! By the end of the session, participants will be able to define the major types of retirement communities in America, locate the laws/regulation governing CCRCs in several states, interpret CCRCs’ annual disclosure statements (ADS), and estimate a prospect’s planned giving capacity based on information found in the CCRCs’ annual disclosure statements. They should also be able to ascertain (through examples) when it is appropriate to utilize session information to create a planned giving capacity for a prospect at their own organization, tailoring as needed to meet organizational objectives
